Bay State Wind invites families to build a wind farm

NEW BEDFORD, MA — Bay State Wind invites residents to learn about a new clean energy sector — offshore wind — and have some hands-on fun in the process by building a model of an offshore wind farm at the July 11 AHA! Night in New Bedford.

Bay State Wind is a joint venture project by Ørsted, the world’s leading offshore wind developer, and Eversource, New England’s largest energy company. The offshore wind farm is in development and will be located approximately 25 miles south of New Bedford.

Bay State Wind will sponsor the workshop, which will involve 50 families working in teams to build turbines and an offshore wind farm like the one Bay State Wind hopes to build off the Massachusetts coast. Workshop participants will work with 70,000 plastic LEGOs to build the wind turbines and design the wind farm under the leadership of a professional architect.

Stephen W. Schwartz, the New Jersey architect who founded Building Blocks Workshops, will lead the event in which small teams and family groups will build wind turbines and place them on a large map of the wind energy lease areas located south of Martha’s Vineyard off the Massachusetts coast.

“It’s great as a family program with adults and kids working together,” said Schwartz.

By the end of the two-hour workshop, participants will have learned something about offshore wind power and why the winds off Massachusetts are so strong and so reliable.

“They’re listening and learning because they will have just finished building all those windmills,” Schwartz said. “You’ve never seen a program like this in your life!”

Founded 20 years ago, Building Blocks Workshops leads LEGO projects in team-building activities to foster cooperation and community engagement. Its clients include private businesses, religious and non-profit organizations.

Bay State Wind invites you to take part in one of the two-hour workshops, which will be held in the basement of Nativity Preparatory School, 66 Spring St., New Bedford. Follow the links below to sign up:
